If all dogs go to heaven, then that is where Rex is now. He hasn't been feeling good for the past 3 or 4 days, and while we hoped he'd snap out of it, this morning we knew that wasn't going to be the case. So this afternoon we had him put down. I consider myself a toughie, and even feel a little guilty about being cold hearted most of the time, but this. This. This was awful. I didn't see our 12 human years x 7 = 84 dog years old dog laying on the table. I didn't see how hard he was working just to breathe, or how grey and washed out his fur had become. I didn't see any of those things. I saw a puppy. Red and white, and silky smooth. I saw the look on Tyler's face when I brought him home for the first time. I saw him wearing a blue bandanna, sitting in a terracotta pot with Madison for a picture I was entering in a contest. I saw him running and frolicking through the yard. Chasing bunnies in the field. I saw a healthy, vibrant dog running through the Christmas tree farm while we picked out a tree. I saw the scrapbook I made of his first year with us, because Tyler and I were only dating and didn't have any kids of our own to dote on. Rex was a "trial run" of sorts, and we always joked that if we broke up there would need to be a custody arrangement. That was what I saw this afternoon when I said goodbye to him for the last time. I full well realize that he is just a dog, but he was our dog. And we loved him.
Tyler was so proud! He loved having a basset again. His family raised and bred them when he was a kid.
I hate this next page. Tyler is the only one still living, but Uncle Pete, Burney, Rex, and the cow are all gone. Wow.
Love this. Todd, Tyson, and Tyler with Rex, and look how young they all are! Rex loved this outing, and he was running so fast, his ears kept flying out like superman. And yes, Rex could run, at one point in his life! :-)
Seriously, I put antlers on him? How cruel! This was a sign of things to come. Bunny ears at Easter, and a tux at our wedding!
Yikes, was I skinny!
Oh, this page. That's Taylor in the picture!!! She loved Rex, and her Rex shirt.
And this... We took a walk to the river, and snapped a few shots along the way (see, I was a photo freak even back then!) Rex and Burney had a blast chasing bunnies, and Tyler and I were so young, and so in love. Goo-goo-ga-ga in love. And yes, that's different then a "we have three kids" kind of love. Not better, just different.
We will miss that big, fat dog. He definitely provided some great moments for us. Like the time we took him for a walk in Everson, and had to call my Dad to come pick us up because he wouldn't walk anymore. A dog who won't walk? That's got to be a basset!
